Matthew Behr LMT

My name is Matthew and I am a Nationally Certified and Georgia State Licensed Massage Therapist.

I graduated from the Costa Rica School of Massage Therapy in 2011 and have since completed advanced trainings at the Berkana Institute of Massage, the Colorado School of Healing Arts, Metropolitan State University, and obtained a B.S. from Colorado State University.  I currently have over 1,500 hours of combined formal massage therapy schooling as well as 14+ years of professional experience.

I specialize in an integrative style of Therapeutic Massage Therapy and utilize elements/techniques from Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial Release, Neuromuscular Therapy, Active and Passive Stretching, Sports Massage, Thai, Shiatsu, Trigger Point Therapy, Aromatherapy, and Craniosacral Therapy in sessions depending on what the client needs. I am also certified in Intra-oral Neuromuscular Therapy to treat TMJ and chronic headaches/migraines.  While I have formal education in the biological sciences - anatomy & physiology, kinesiology, pathology, etc..., I believe that we are more than just a bag of bones. I am committed to upholding a high level of professionalism and compassionate care in a safe space that welcomes people of all genders, ethnicities, and orientations.

Before I went into private practice, I worked for spas, fitness clubs, massage schools, Chiropractors, sports teams, nursing homes, and hospitals.  My clientele has consisted of people from all walks of life, but I have found that most of my clientele consists of athletes, runners, swimmers, bodybuilders, soccer players, football players, hockey players, basketball players, baseball players, rock climbers, cyclists, etc... as well as people rehabilitating from car accidents and orthopedic surgeries.  I have also worked extensively with whiplash injuries and chronic migraines caused by car accidents.  In these cases, I recommend and offer muscle-specific treatment work - sometimes called "Medical Massage" - spending the full session on the area of sub-acute physiological trauma.

I have had over 10 orthopedic surgeries (amongst a variety of sprains and strains), and I found that receiving massage therapy/bodywork played a critical role in each recovery. I understand and empathize with people struggling with chronic back and neck pain as well as shoulder pain, elbow pain, knee pain, and ankle pain because I've been there myself.

In instances of acute pain and trauma, it can be unimaginable thinking about going in for a massage or to a chiropractor because the area of trauma can be very inflamed and painful. During this initial acute injury phase - R.I.C.E - Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate. After about 3 days, light massage therapy around the injured area can reduce inflammatory fluid buildup and has been proven to speed up recovery.  In these situations, I recommend committing to 1 session/week in the post-acute stage for 4 weeks to get the most out of massage therapy.

Please give me a call if you are interested in giving massage therapy a try, or if you're looking for a new massage therapist.  I look forward to working with you.

-Matthew
